I’m so tired of “just breathe” advice during a panic attack.
When my heart is pounding at 140bpm, trying to count to 4 and breathe slowly literally just makes me hyperventilate more. It feels impossible to focus on a slow rhythm when I’m spiraling.
Does anyone have a weird or specific trick that actually works instantly? I need something physical or tactile because the standard breathing stuff is just making it worse. What’s your immediate go-to move?
Answer:
Your heart racing is a product of fear taking over. The fastest way to slow it down and regain calm is to focus — but on the right thing.
Pick a single focal point on your body: your heart itself. At 140bpm, you can actually feel it pounding. Put your hand over your chest, and focus completely on each beat — the rhythm, the contraction, the raw physical sensation of it.
By anchoring your attention there, you pull yourself out of the fear spiral, and as that happens, your heart rate will naturally start to slow down. You’ll be able to feel it happening in real time, and that’s what pulls you out of the panic.
Breathing exercises work on the same principle — focusing your attention — but in your case, deep breathing can actually expand your chest and put pressure against a heart that’s already racing, adding more discomfort instead of relief. That’s likely why “just breathe” is backfiring on you. Placing your hand on your chest and focusing on the heartbeat itself skips that problem entirely, and tends to work better for exactly your situation.
